The Leeds Digital Inclusion Fund fights to enhance digital proficiency of population

Ten community organizations, including those in West Leeds, have been awarded grants of up to £10,000 to address disparities in digital technology access. Leeds Community Foundation and 100% Digital Leeds highlight that seven percent of the UK population remains offline, with 9 million individuals struggling to connect independently, exacerbating societal inequalities. Digital exclusion can hinder individuals and communities from engaging with essential services and one another, affecting earning potential, employability, communication, and the ability to connect, West Leeds Dispatch reports.

The Leeds Digital Inclusion Fund was established in 2022 through a collaboration between Leeds Community Foundation, 100% Digital Leeds, and Leeds Digital Ball. This initiative unites the private, public, and third sectors with the shared goal of equipping communities and individuals with the skills, support, and resources necessary for active online participation, both now and in the future.

The funding will support the establishment of a digital café and the development of a health and well-being hub in Bramley, as well as a six-week course in Armley. The Armley course will utilize art and creative software to empower participants to enhance their digital proficiency, improve digital access, and boost their confidence.

The Leeds Digital Inclusion Fund continues to assist those facing significant digital exclusion, from setting up Digital Health Hubs that enable older individuals to access essential services to providing refugees and asylum seekers with the skills and tools needed for online benefits and employment opportunities. The fund also supports the rehabilitation and resettlement of youth offenders.

Cleveland Henry, Chair of Leeds Community Foundation, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming number of applications received, acknowledging the challenging circumstances faced by communities. He credited the fundraising efforts of Leeds Digital Ball for doubling the number of community organizations funded this year. Henry also emphasized the strong partnership between Leeds Community Foundation and 100% Digital Leeds, which has led to well-conceived plans for sustainable digital inclusion initiatives. This partnership looks forward to continuing its efforts in making a substantial impact on the lives of people in Leeds for years to come.
